meet people, weird people

As a college student, it was common to meet people who wanted me to sign political petitions. They would often find people on campus in order to capture those signatures. Sometimes, I even came across weird people, funny people, and sometimes crazy people.

It is difficult to avoid political solicitors. Sometimes, they're seeking a signature for a certain reform or a certain law to be passed. However, when I meet people who are political solicitors, I find them both needy and annoying. Is it appropriate to meet people in public and solicit them for signatures? Is it appropriate to even meet people in their private homes?

I understand that a certain amount of signatures are needed in order to capture the attention of the "Big Guys". However, coming onto a college campus or knocking on people's doors doesn't seem like an appropriate way to go about. It often comes off as annoying, especially to the apathetic college crowd who can't really meet people when they're late and rushing to their next class. What do you think of political solicitors?
