strange news

Sometimes crazy people have good intentions, but this one didn't quite make it. It just ended up being strange news with no message, no matter how well intentioned and adamant the opinion of the Ebay seller was.

The Ebay auction for an original Topps Allen & Ginter trading card contained a cut signature and drawing of Fidel Castro, not the most liked person in world history. The card generated a little controversy when originally issued, but one Ebayer REALLY didn't like it. Markkali (his user name) purchased the collector's card on an Ebay auction in October and decided to auction it again last week, but part of the strange news was, it didn't look the same. The seller had written numerous anti-Castro references and statements on the front and back.  His intention was to make a statement about Castro and his long tyrannical rule over the Cuban people.

But why? He took a collector's card and made it worthless with the writing. He said he wanted to send a message to Topps and other trading card manufacturers not to "glorify mass murders". There might have been other ways which would have been more effective. A letter to the company. An editorial to a newspaper.

The really weird thing was that the owner wanted to re-auction the defaced card to raise money for "The Center of a Free Cuba." What kind of money was he going to raise with this? The once collectable card was defaced. The auction ended up being removed anyway because markkali had not submitted a letter signed by the charity involved.  Either way it was pointless and carried no real message.

The owner says he will relist the item with a signed letter. The anti-Castro writings on the card were "improvements" in his opinion. Each to their own, but it was weird news to me just the same!  The card is worthless now!
