We often describe people whose philosophy of life differs greatly from our own as crazy people, although most of us have our own particular quirks and idiosyncrasies. In that regard we are all crazy people. In reality, very few people are actually insane. Truly crazy people are deemed as such by a psychiatrist. Having a mild personality disorder doesn’t necessarily mean you are crazy, though it may mean you are dysfunctional.
However, there is one particular personality disorder that scares me, and I don’t frighten easily. It has been my misfortune to come across one or two individuals who manifest the majority of the symptoms associated with antisocial personality disorder. Symptoms of this disorder include relentless lying, stealing, habitual trouble with the law, an inclination to abuse the rights and boundaries of others, substance abuse, aggression, restlessness, disregard of safety, lack of remorse, recklessness, a feeling of great entitlement, failure to initiate or maintain friendships and a distrust of authority figures.
Mass murderer Ted Bundy had antisocial personality disorder. People with this disorder used to be called psychopaths or sociopaths. Psychopaths are not crazy people. They understand the rules of society, they simply choose not to comply with them.
If you think someone you know has antisocial personality disorder, it is in your best interests to stay as far away from them as possible. Though sane, sociopaths are highly dangerous individuals.
